In West Roxbury, Massachusetts, Anthony Michael Hall was born. His parents are auto body business owner Larry Hall and jazz and blues performer Mercedes Hall. A show industry manager is his stepfather. Mary Christian, who is also his sister, is an actress. His ancestors are both Irish and Italian. Hall’s birth name was Michael Anthony Thomas Charles Hall, but when he learned that another Michael Hall was already a Screen Actors’ Guild member, he changed his name to Anthony Michael.
Following a one-year tenure on Saturday Night Live (1975), Hall’s career was in danger of being derailed by binge drinking and excessive partying. He was able to regain control, though, and has maintained sobriety since 1990, the year he portrayed Jim in Edward Scissorhands (1990). He played Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates in the television movie Pirates of Silicon Valley after playing a number of small roles in the 1990s (1999). Since then, Hall has concentrated on television work, such as an 81-episode run on Stephen King’s The Dead Zone (2002), but he has also been able to take on film projects, such as the character of Mike Engel in The Dark Knight (2008).
Hall has honed his musical skills in addition to acting, serving as the band’s lead vocalist and lyricist since Hall of Mirrors was founded in 1998. Hall, who lives in Los Angeles, California, supports at-risk youngsters through the Anthony Michael Hall Literacy Club.
