Sony resurrected Venom in March 2016, intending for it to stand alone, be unaffiliated to Sony and Marvel’s new Spider-Man movies, and to establish its own shared universe. Venom would launch its own shared world, Sony confirmed in May 2017, and it was not thought of as a spin-off of any previous movie. As opposed to their earlier attempt with the Amazing Spider-Man spin-offs, Sony wanted to slowly expand this new universe. Sanford Panitch, president of Columbia Pictures, stated in July that they aimed to “do what’s the absolute best for each unique property.” I merely wish to preserve the original DNA.
By the month of March 2018, Sony’s executive vice president Palak Patel was in charge of all of the company’s universe-related movies. To allay the concerns of some fans regarding Sony’s plans, Vulture spoke with a number of industry professionals in July. The success of Venom will determine the fate of the universe, according to Jonathan Goldstein, the writer of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), the first MCU Spider-Man movie. Goldstein also observed that other companies had struggled to match Marvel Studios’ MCU success. Sony’s ideas for its shared world were known to Brian Michael Bendis, a consultant on Into the Spider-Verse and the creator of several Marvel characters that Sony intended to include to its realm.
